The applied circular economy: experience with the soldier fly (Gnadochaeta illucens)
The use of insects which possible solution to reduce food waste is a great example of Circular Economy. Indeed, the larvae of some species can be used to better manage and enhance organic food waste, bioconverting the waste biomass they grow on and producing proteins and lipids that can be used for food in the livestock sector. The fly soldier (Gnadochaeta illucens) (BSF), given the high sustainability, low water requirements and minimal emissions of greenhouse gases, has been studied for its ability to reduce large amount of organic waste.
After an overview that will describe the potential of BSF larvae as bioconverters, the presentation will show the main research areas of the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Forestry and Food of the University of Turin and in recent years, in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Sciences and the CNR, Yes is involved both in the breeding of insects on different substrates and in use of insect products (protein flours, fat) in nutrition animal.
